SUSTAINING

Nanotechnology impact.png

We have such a beautiful world, yet our capacity to abuse it knows no bounds. Fuelled mostly by greed, we have been plundering and abusing the Earth unforgivably, yet if we are to survive, our behaviour must change rapidly and completely and we must adopt a fully responsible and caring approach towards Environmental Sustainability.

We can no longer trash our mountains, pollute our rivers and oceans, poison our air and denude our forests.

We use more of the earth's resources than it can renew. Earth Overshoot Day is the date when we’ve used up more from nature than the planet can possibly renew in the entire year – and ever year, that date comes earlier.

Most of the world’s leading and so-called, 'more advanced', nations use more than double the amount of resources they’re able to produce. If we carry on using the earth’s resources at our current rate of consumption, we would need 1.7 planets to support the demand on the earth’s ecosystems.

Sea grass absorbs more than 50% carbon dioxide than a comparable area of rain forest, yet these 'grasslands' are being depleted at an alarming rate due to bottom trawling fishing practices and the rampant killing of sharks, whose responsibilities including keeping the grasses natural predators at bay, such as manatees.

This is also causing an accelerated rate of animal and fauna species to die out, with more than one million species now facing extinction.

This loss of biodiversity reduces water quality and food security, as it disrupts the order of nature. Natural pest control agents such as frogs and insects diminish, while the huge reduction in bee populations leads to loss of pollination of natural food sources.

Greenhouse gas levels are at an all-time high. The burning of fossil fuels, emissions from transport, and the environmental impact of intensive farming have all contributed to the highest levels of CO2 ever recorded in our atmosphere, and this is the prime cause for the acceleration of Climate Change.

THERE ARE, HOWEVER, PRACTICAL STEPS WE CAN ALL TAKE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE:

INDIVIDUALS

  • Travel smart – car sharing

  • Food waste – 40% wated in developed countries

  • Buy / eat less

  • Eat less meat – 15% of emissions from meat production

  • Ensure fish purchases come from sustainable sources (XXX)

  • Save water, electricity and gas – TURN OFF when not in use

  • Save electricity at home – install solar panels

  • Use re-usable F & B containers and bags and shop with them

  • Reuse and recycle

  • Print less

  • Reduce / stop using single use plastics

  • Buy local food with the seasons

  • Buy food fresh and unpacked in plastic

  • Do not buy products wrapped in plastic

BUSINESES

  • Use Zoom instead of travelling

  • Optimise ‘work from home’ strategies

  • Save water, electricity and gas – TURN OFF when not in use

  • Save electricity at home – install solar panels

  • All KPRs to include energy saving element and environment component

  • Waste management policies

  • Community engagement with environmental sustainability focus

  • Install motion activated lighting in relevant areas

  • Incentivise interdepartmental competitiveness to save energy

  • Reuse and recycle

  • Print less

INDIVIDUALS & BUSINESS

  • Use your vote and influence to lobby politicians, embassies, companies regarding:

    • Deforestation

    • Land use issues

    • Fisheries and ocean conservation

    • Fossil Fuel exploration and development

    • Atomic energy instead of fossil fuel burning energy

    • Development of Green Energy

    • Water quality and food security

    • Redirect budget funding focus from military to environmental needs

  • Register with worthwhile NGOs in whose work you have an interest to see how you can help

  • Spare some time to help local, worthy causes

  • Sign up with organisations that drive national and international petitions

  • Assist with educational programmes – spread the word to change or die!

WE MUST BECOME MORE CARING FOR OUR PLANET AND MORE RESPONSIBLE AND RESPECTFUL. OTHERWISE, OUR CHILDREN AND FUTURE GENERATIONS
WILL CURSE US FOR BEING SUCH APPALLING CUSTODIANS OF OUR HOME.
